Film Review: Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) is directed by Michael Dougherty and stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown. Yes, Eleven from Stranger Things in a monster movie…fitting.

Monarch, the monster hunting agency, faces government control which would kill the ancient monsters like Godzilla. Many more are out there. A total of 17… and counting. Godzilla faces the his rival, King Ghidorah (the three-headed one) and many others with the help from Mothra, the beautiful healing moth. While all this giant monster battles are happening, down on human turf, the humans are battling their own inner and family issues.

Action-packed and the perfect start to the summer blockbusters. Who doesn’t like a giant monster film? Granted, there are those peopke out there, but not many. It’s super fun and entertaining. I came out with a giant smile on my face after seeing so much of the monsters battle each other. Unlike the 2014 film, Godzilla is actually in this one!

You wouldn’t think that there would be family drama in this type of film, but there was. Otherwise, it would just be humans scrambling while Godzilla did his thing. I didn’t care for much of it, but it worked with the balance of the monsters and humans. SPOILER: The human drama made the scene where they help Godzilla come back made it more impactful, so it works in my opinion. It’s better than a mindless brawl of monsters.

Obviously, there is a lot of CGI, but none of it was over done or over exposed. There are many reviewers saying that the battles were obscured with rain and darkness, but I could see everything. Perhaps it was the type of theater they went to? I didn’t see it in IMAX and still saw everything in those ‘dark’ scenes.

There are many picture perfect visuals that I can’t un-see. Mothra and King Ghidorah being the ones that really sparked the best visuals. You just seat in your seat in awe when these two come on screen. Even though one is the ‘bad guy,’ you can’t help but feel like they are magnificent creatures.

Definitely a film to be experienced in theaters and surpasses the Godzilla film in 2014 by a long shot. If you like monster movies and battles with exceptional visuals, then you will love this.

What’s to like?

  • Visuals
  • Grandiose battles

Not to like?

  • Human drama is meh. Wasn’t needed, but also welcomed in a film like this in some ways.
  • Not a lot on the background of the monsters and could of benefitted from it
  • The overall story didn’t move much

Godzilla: King of the Monsters gets a 7/10 from me. It’s not great, but its not bad! It’s entertaining and visually cool! But could benefit from more story and background of the monsters. But hey, it’s a monster battle movie. It doesn’t really NEED all that, unless you expect it.
